Bath helps to launch new £4 million scholarships scheme

The University of Bath is one of a number of universities across the UK which are today (Tuesday 8 December) launching a groundbreaking £1,000 scholarship for students who wish to study science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects.

The 'Eliahou Dangoor Scholarships', launched with a £3 million donation over three years, will be the largest private bursary or scholarship widening participation scheme known to the Office for Fair Access (OFFA) in the UK. Matched funding from government is expected to bring the total funding available to £4 million.

The scheme will be administered across the 1994 Group universities (of which Bath is a member) as well as the Russell Group of universities.

Thanks to the generous donation from Dr Naim Dangoor, a successful property developer, this scholarship will assist up to 4,000 students, most from under-privileged backgrounds, to study vital science and maths-based subjects at the UK's leading research-intensive universities. It is hoped that around 100 students at Bath will benefit from the scholarship.

Dr Dangoor has said that this scholarship, named in honour of his father Eliahou Dangoor, is his way of thanking the country that gave him refuge after he left Iraq in the 1960s. It is hoped that this ambitious scheme will encourage more young people to consider studying STEM subjects at one of the country's leading universities.

Professor Kevin Edge, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath, has warmly welcomed the donation and the creation of the scholarship scheme.

He said: "We are very grateful for the outstanding generosity of Dr Dangoor. These scholarships will provide a much-needed financial boost to nearly one hundred talented students who want to study a STEM subject at the University of Bath.

"These scholarships provide an excellent addition to the wide range of bursaries and other support we are currently able to offer to students studying here at Bath to ensure they fulfil their potential."
