                                                    ---------------------------

The Department of Psychology regrets to announce the sad news that Professor David Gooding passed away at the weekend.

Professor Gooding had gone through a long period of illness, and retired in August 2009 after a distinguished career as Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at the University.

He played a central role in shaping the Department of Psychology as it emerged just over 10 years ago. His work on visual cognition and scientific reasoning was highly distinctive and was well known to scholars in the UK and internationally.

He was Founding Director of Studies of the successful and long-running Masters programme in Science, Culture & Communication, and Director of the Science Studies Centre.

After his retirement, Professor Gooding planned to continue his association with the University, contributing to a new Masters programme in Risk, Health & Science Communication to be launched in 2010.

He will be greatly missed, and our sympathies are with his family.

Information on funeral arrangements will be announced shortly.

Family flowers only please.

Donations can be made to Leukaemia Research via Clarkson's Funeral Directors, Bath.
