The University of Bath’s Department of Psychology, in association with its School for Health, has been selected to run a new Doctorate programme in Clinical Psychology for the Avon, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire region.
DClinPsyc programmes provide a professional qualification and give eligibility for Chartered Clinical Psychologist status thus enabling graduates to work within the National Health Service. There are currently 31 programmes in the UK.
The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Glynis Breakwell, said: “I am delighted that Bath has been selected to deliver this prestigious programme. It is an ideal fit within a University of our calibre and strongly reinforces our focus on applied programmes for professionals.”
The successful bid was led by Professor Christine Griffin, Head of the Department of Psychology, and Tim Bilham, Director of Education Research & Development in the School for Health.
Professor Griffin said: “This is an exciting new development for the department and for the University. It will strengthen the existing national and international reputation of Bath for delivering high quality professional training and research in applied health psychology.”
Mr Bilham added: “This is the culmination of several years of planning and negotiation. It provides us with an important partnership with the NHS and offers significant opportunities for developing continuing professional development.”
The programme will admit its first students in the autumn of 2011.
