Adverse weather conditions – update Wednesday 4.30pm

The Emergency Management Team regrets that today’s announcements in response to the adverse weather were not as smooth as others over the past week.

A number of factors contributed to delays in posting some of the announcements and the need to revise the guidance offered about the state of campus and its approach routes during the course of the morning.

Our 7.30am announcement was affected by technical problems with one of the University servers, compounded by the number of people trying to access the message.

Our 10am message was delayed by 15 minutes as we were only advised at 9.55am by the local council that Bathwick Hill was open and this prompted a last minute revision to the announcement.

With the Council’s assurance that Bathwick Hill was now open, and the bus companies saying they would resume services as soon as that happened, combined with no further snow being forecast, it appeared right to open the campus.

As that 10am notice was being posted, heavy snow started to fall in Bath. This caused a rapid accumulation of snow on campus and prompted the bus companies to decide not to run after all, hence the further announcement at 11.15am.

We recognise that many staff will have set off by the time the 11.15am announcement was posted and will have been frustrated at arriving on campus to find poor conditions. In particular, the state of the car parks deteriorated considerably between 10am and midday.

All decisions have been made on the best information available to us at the time and we have communicated them as swiftly as possible.

Today will be considered as a closure day for the purposes of the University’s adverse weather policy. Staff who were not able to attend work will not, therefore, have to take annual or unpaid leave.

Tomorrow - Thursday

Looking ahead, there is a significant risk of today’s snowfall in the Bath area turning to ice overnight. Freezing fog is also predicted.

The University still has reasonable supplies of salt and every effort will be made by the ground staff to clear both paths and as much as possible of the car parks.

A decision will be made at 8.30am tomorrow (note later time) on whether the University will be able to open as normal.

As usual it will be published on the web, twitter and on the University’s severe weather helpline 01225 383200.

The meeting of Court scheduled for tomorrow and the associated tour/ showcase lecture has now been postponed.

If coming onto campus please take great care as roads and paths are icy and slippery.
