New PhD studentships in developmental, stem cell biology and neurobiology awarded

The Departments of Biology & Biochemistry and Pharmacy & Pharmacology have been awarded a prestigious doctoral training grant worth almost £400,000 by the Medical Research Council (MRC).

With additional support from the University, the grant will fund eight postgraduate students in total, for a period of up to four years.

Students will be able to choose from a wide range of projects across the two departments in the areas of developmental & stem cell biology, and neurobiology research.

The joint funding bid, prepared by Professor Melanie Welham, in conjunction with Professor Sue Wonnacott and Directors of Postgraduate Studies James Doughty and Ian Eggleston, was one of eight applications that received funding, out of a total of 19 submissions.

Academic lead, Professor Welham, said: “We’re thrilled that the MRC has recognised our research strengths in these areas by funding these studentships.

“This is a great opportunity for collaborative projects across the two departments in the strategically important areas of developmental and stem cell biology, and neurobiology research.”

Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Research, Professor Jane Millar, said: “This award is timely for the recently launched Faculty of Science Graduate School, and will enable us to continue to recruit and train the best students in this important research area.”

Applications are now being sought from high calibre students in order to allocate the first tranche of the awards from October 2010.

The full list of projects will be posted on Findaphd.com.
