Local people are invited to the next Bath Science Café on Monday 8 March (Raven Pub) to hear about a brain-centred pain phenomenon that isn’t caused by injury and is unresponsive to painkillers.
Professor David Blake, an honorary physician at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, will share his clinical interest in mechanisms of pain.
He said: “There have been considerable advances in both the understanding of this fearful state and our ability to treat it, many of them made in Bath.
“My presentation will provide insight into the complexity of brain networks, the process of synaesthesia in pain (when perceptions are intermixed), and the nature of brain plasticity (how the neurones and their attachments alter after certain injuries).”
Professor Blake has held appointments at the University of Bath. He previously held the Arthritis Campaign Chair at the University of London.
The Science Café is a chance to informally explore the latest ideas in science and technology and debate the issues.
The talk will be held in The Raven pub in Queen Street in the centre of Bath. No tickets or reservations are required – just turn up at 7.30pm for an 8pm start.
Organisers will ask for a small voluntary donation to cover travel costs for the speakers.
