Wobble your way to the future

Wobble board exercises and strapping and taping techniques were just some of the activities teenagers in Swindon tried out as an introduction to higher education.

It was part of two days of workshop challenges at Swindon College, in conjunction with the University of Bath, to encourage school leavers to consider higher education and a career in sports therapy.

Wobble board exercises are used in physiotherapy and the youngsters were also given a chance to practice strapping up and taping sports injuries.

Dawn Morse, Sports Therapy Curriculum Leader, said the event showed students just how hands-on the degree was.

Mrs Morse said: “We wanted to give young people a flavour of what they could expect if they went on to take the foundation degree.

“The course is practical and involves a good deal of work-based training which means students qualify with invaluable experience, as well as an academic qualification.”

Fifteen students, aged 16-19, took part in the workshop which was hailed as a great success by both the University and Swindon College.

One of the particpants, Shanice Henderson, 17, said as a result of the course she wanted to become a sports massage therapist.

She said: “I’m definitely going to do the foundation degree after I finish college!”

Those who decide to pursue a career in sports therapy at the college will spend two years taking their foundation degree, and after a third year will qualify with a full BSc Honours Degree from the University of Bath.

A series of Experience Technology workshops focused around motorsport design and manufacturing will be held at Wiltshire College’s Castle Combe Racing Circuit on 19, 20 and 21 March between 9:30am and 4.30pm. Students will discover the technology behind the motorsport industry, and will get the chance to design and manufacture their very own component for a racing car.
