Implementing proposals for re-organisation: Appointment of Deans of Faculty and Directors of Administration

Expressions of interest for the roles of Dean of Faculty were requested from eligible members of staff in January and a number of expressions of interest were subsequently received.

Each member of staff who submitted a written application was interviewed for the role by a panel chaired by the Vice-Chancellor.

The recommendation of the Vice-Chancellor was then considered by the Senior Academic Appointments Committee last week, after further consultation within each Faculty.

The following appointments were then made by University Council last Thursday:

  • Professor Gary Hawley has been re-appointed as Dean of Engineering & Design for five years from 1 August 2010;
  • Professor Roger Eatwell has been re-appointed as Dean of Humanities & Social Sciences for three years from 1 August 2010;
  • Professor David Bird has been appointed as Dean of Science for three years from 1 August 2010 (with designate status from 1 March 2010 to provide for a smooth transition to the new arrangements for the Faculty).

The role of Dean and Head of the School of Management was exempt from this process as the changes to the relevant job description were not significant.  Professor Richard Elliott's term of office as Dean and Head of School therefore continues to 31 October 2013.

Directors of Administration

These appointments follow the recent recruitment of Directors of Administration for each Faculty/School:

  • Faculty of Engineering and Design - Lucie Pursell
  • Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences - Ann-Marie Hartland
  • Faculty of Science - Amanda Harper
  • School of Management - Kay Elliott
