Report of University Council Meeting – 25 February 2010

The following items were discussed at the recent meeting of University Council:

  • Funding of Higher Education: Council considered the latest communication from HEFCE regarding 2010/11 funding.
  • Revised Forecasts for 2009/10: The revised forecasts for the University for 2009/10 were approved.
  • Refurbishment of Norwood House: The proposed refurbishment of Norwood House was approved. Existing student bedrooms and kitchens will be refurbished and all offices reinstated to student residences between May/June and September 2010 (with an option to vary the project by permanent or temporary inclusion of offices in Norwood after refurbishment). The total cost of the project is £5.7m.
  • Revised HEFCE Capital Programme 2008-11: Council noted the revision of the HEFCE Capital Programme for the University. The main features are: construction of the East Building (£15m), upgrade of research facilities (£2.9m), IT infrastructure work (£2.4m), thin clients for the Library (£488k) and refurbishment of identified general teaching accommodation in 1 West, 4 East, 3 East and 8 West (£5.9m).
  • Student Satisfaction Improvement Strategy: Council considered the University’s strategy for improving student satisfaction.
  • Appointment of Deans of Faculties: These appointments were approved by Council. More details.
  • Sport: Council received a presentation on the performance of the University in the rankings of British Universities & Colleges Sport.
  • HEFCE Consultations: Council noted with concern proposed changes to the Financial Memorandum which affected the autonomy and governance of universities.
