Do you think the University should ensure it attracts and retains the best staff and students regardless of race, gender, disability or any other difference?
Do you know the difference between positive action and discrimination?
Are you open to being challenged in a non-threatening way?
These are just some of the issues raised in a new online equalities and diversity training package aimed at all staff.
Mark Humphriss, Chair of the Equalities & Diversity Committee, said: “We recognise that most people do not have time to do longer scheduled equalities and diversity courses.
“So the University has been working for some months now with Marshall ACM to devise ‘Diversity in the workplace’, an online module written in an accessible and engaging form.
“It is suitable for academic and non-academic staff, and is already being marketed to other universities as a more appropriate resource than many of the dry and legalistic packages that are currently available.”
Staff who complete the online course successfully will be able to record this as evidence of professional development recommended by the University in their Performance Review. The package creates a certificate of completion at the end which can be printed out and retained.
Please note: The University will not be tracking individual scores to any part of the module.
The University is committed through its Single Equality Scheme to ensure that as many staff as possible (and any students who wish) take this new module. Some universities have actually made it compulsory.
You can access the course online. When you first log in you will be asked to register as a new user. The course itself only takes about 45 minutes to complete.
For those involved or interested in equality impact assessment an additional module is available at the same link.
Mark Humphriss added: “I strongly commend this new resource, which should help us all to value, enhance and promote excellence and diversity within the University.”
