Report of University Council Meeting – 25 February 2010

A number of items were discussed at the recent meeting of University Council, including the refurbishment of Norwood House and the revision of the HEFCE Capital (building) Programme for the University.

Public Lecture: Nuclear explosives – the technology of destruction

Local people are invited to a free public lecture at the University of Bath on Wednesday 17 March, which will explore the problems the world faces, now that Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) are back on the political agenda.

Inaugural Lecture: ‘War, Peace and Justice: the dilemmas of International security’

A lecture on Wednesday 10 March will examine the nature and causes of contemporary war and conflict, and consider the prospect for peace in the 21st Century.

Professor debates the role of NATO & whether it has a future

Over fifty teaching rooms to be upgraded this year

As a result of feedback from students, the University is making a substantial investment in the quality of its teaching rooms, and we are pleased to announce that University Council has agreed to upgrade over 50 more general teaching rooms during 2010.

Changes to Points Based Immigration System – Important info for staff

The University is required to ensure that all students who are issued with a Certificate of Acceptance (CAS) are engaging with their studies. We are legally required to report to UKBA any changes which will affect the conditions of a student’s visa. Student Records & Examinations Office will soon be offering training in this area.

Software sniffs out criminals by the shape of their nose

Forget iris and fingerprint scans – scanning noses could be a quicker and easier way to verify a person’s identity. Unlike other facial features used for biometrics, such as eyes or ears, noses are difficult to conceal and also aren’t changed much by facial expression. Dr Adrian Evans and Adrian Moorhouse, from the University’s Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering, decided to investigate whether images of people’s noses could be used to recognise individuals.

University welcomes its new Pro-Vice-Chancellor

Professor Bernard Morley has taken up his post as the University’s new Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching. Professor Morley started on 1 March 2010 and succeeds Professor Ian Jamieson who retired after 24 years of service with the University.
