Free lecture: What is Buddhism?

Local people are invited to a public lecture at the University about Buddhism and its place in modern society (Wednesday 2 June). The lecture will start at 5.15pm and will be held in Lecture Theatre 8 West 3.22.
Ralph Allen Drive closure

Work on the retaining wall in Ralph Allen Drive is now coming to an end. Ralph Allen Drive will be closed to through traffic between 0700 and 1900 on Monday 24 May to Friday 28 May 2010.

Pamela Cookey and Jess Garland followed up TeamBath’s fourth Co-operative Superleague victory by collecting two of the top awards at the end of season Netball Superleague Awards.
Bath is still ‘best in the South-West’ in new Complete University Guide

The University of Bath has been ranked 12th in the UK in this year’s Complete University Guide league table meaning that once again it is top of the regional ranking for the South-West. The league table is published in association with The Independent newspaper.
Update to yesterday’s power supply interruptions

Western Power have advised the Department of Estates that they had an HV cable fault halfway up Widcombe Hill at 4.53pm yesterday. The cable was fed from Dorchester Street in Bath which also feeds power to the University. All power was restored by 6pm.
Straw house can withstand hurricanes (and the Big Bad Wolf!)

Recent tests on the BaleHaus@Bath, a low carbon house made of straw bale panels at the University of Bath, have confirmed it is more than strong enough to withstand hurricane force winds, turning the children’s fairytale of the three pigs on its head. In the children’s story, the pigs hide in a house of straw, only to be blown down by the big bad wolf. However the research at Bath proves that straw is a sturdy sustainable building material after all.
Review of Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS)

The Joint Review Group (JRG), a sub-group of USS’s Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC), held its final negotiations meeting on 30 April 2010. It was unable to come to an agreement on the necessary changes to USS. The JRG has now been disbanded with the USS JNC receiving two sets of formal proposals, one from the Employers Pension Forum and one from the UCU. It is anticipated that the JNC will reach a conclusion on 7 July 2010.
Independent review of higher education funding

On 17 May, Universities UK submitted a response to the second call for evidence to the Independent Review of Higher Education being led by Lord Browne. Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Glynis Breakwell, headed the UUK Funding Task Group that prepared the submission.

Salters’ Festival of Chemistry being held at the University on 18 and 20 May.
The festival is an initiative of The Salters’ Institute, whose aim is to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young.
It includes hands-on activities, including a challenge to fix Dr Who’s tardis.
Two Bath students win Student Employee of the Year at regional level

James Huelin who works as a supervisor in SU Bars has won the Student Employee of the Year Leadership Award having been nominated by his manager, Adrian Boreham. Nik Kamal, who works for Earth’s Wisdom in Bath, has won the International Student Employee of the Year.

Bath graduate generously donates new Asia/Pacific Scholarship

Alumnus Stuart Appleton (BSc Social Sciences 1976) has made a generous gift to establish a scholarship, open to students from 32 countries within the Asia/Pacific region, to study for a taught postgraduate degree within the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences at the University.
Professor appointed to national expert group on depression

Nick Gould, Professor of Social Work, has been appointed to an expert group that has been established by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to undertake a project commissioned by the Department of Health to identify markers of quality in services for people experiencing depression.

Memorial stone to mark lives lost or injured on local roads

On Saturday 22 May, at 11am a memorial stone is being unveiled in a garden off Lower Borough Walls in Bath to recognise and remember ‘lives lost and broken on south west roads’.

Researchers from the School for Health are looking for volunteers to take part in anproject designed to explore how important breakfast is to our health. The team has been awarded £481,000 for the three-year investigation into whether regularly skipping breakfast can lead to weight gain and associated negative health consequences.
