Research to help bring honeybees back from the brink

Researchers from the University of Bath are collaborating on a £1 million project to reduce the impact of disease on honeybees. Dr Ed Feil and Dr Nick Priest, from the University’s Department of Biology & Biochemistry, will look at the genetics of the bees and the bacterium which causes European Foulbrood disease, whilst Dr Nick Britton, from the Department of Mathematical Sciences, will mathematically model how the disease spreads within the bee colony.
Modern Pentathlete Freyja Prentice 12th on World Cup Final debut

Young Briton Freyja Prentice finished 12th in her first World Cup Final in Moscow on Saturday (19 June). The 20-year-old University of Bath Biology student was joined in the team for Moscow by French & Politics student Samantha Murray, who finished 24th, and Katy Burke (Sports Performance), who was 27th.

Battle of the sexes exists in the plant world too

Research led by Dr Paula Kover (Biology & Biochemistry) has shown for the first time that in plants, fathers, as well as mothers, can influence the size of seeds. Their findings could open new avenues to increase crop yields and improve food security for an ever-growing global human population.

Student switch off success – more electricity saved again!

This year’s Student Switch Off has just ended another year of great success. This is the fourth year we have run a competition where each student residence block competes against the others to reduce energy consumption over the academic year. The winning blocks were Wolfson on-campus and John Wood KB off-campus, with the competition resulting in a saving of 10% of electricity use compared to 3 years ago.
Free places available for HE taster workshop for 16-19 year olds

Free places are still available on a three-day non-residential workshop Build a Working Engine, which is being held at Swindon College in partnership with the University of Bath. The workshop is aimed at 16-19 years olds and it will run from 7-9 July, between 9am and 4pm at Swindon College’s North Star Campus. The workshop will offer young people who are interested in engineering a taster of what it would be like to study the subject at degree level.

BRE CICM Research Wins International Awards

Researchers in the BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering have been awarded two seperate prizes for best papers published in the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Journals during 2009.
