HEFCE welcomes revised timetable for Research Excellence Framework (REF)

The timetable for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) has been confirmed. Submissions will be expected in 2013 before the assessment phase of the REF takes place during 2014 to inform funding from 2015-16.

Research student Teresa Chiang from the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering is currently running an experiment on cognitive processing in the context of energy use. Teresa is keen to recruit staff and students, men and women of all ages, to participate in the experiment which takes no more than 30 minutes and involves spot-the-difference computerised tasks.
South West teenagers invited for taste of uni life

As part of the Universities Aimhigher programme, the University is running a residential UniTasters for Year 11 and 12 pupils this week. The aim is for young people to experience life as a student, they will have the chance to take part in academic workshops of their choice and will also be given information, advice and guidance sessions regarding university/ course choices.

Pensions: Update on Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS)

The USS’s Joint Negotiating Committee met yesterday to consider two formal proposals, one from the Employers Pension Forum and one from the University & College Union. At the meeting, the JNC agreed to recommend the package of proposals put forward by the Employers Pension Forum to the USS Trustee Board.
ACE student shortlisted for UK’s largest student architecture prize

Student Nick Shurey (Architecture & Civil Engineering) has been named as a finalist in this year’s 3DReid Student Prize – the UK’s largest student award, which is worth £1,500 to the winner. Nick’s proposal was selected by visitors to the practice’s in-office exhibition for the London Festival of Architecture.

Research to protect historic architecture from floods
