Bath backs national Donor Pin Week

The University of Bath is backing national Donor Pin Week as a way of celebrating the many generous donors who have helped to support its groundbreaking work over the past 12 months. This annual event, now in its fourth year, helps to recognise and celebrate the enormous impact that donations and charitable gifts to universities have each year.

Temporary accommodation for international students

The University is expecting a record number of new international students this year, some of whom have not met the deadlines for applying for University accommodation. Since the private sector currently has limited availability, please let us know if you would be interested in providing temporary accommodation.

Double win for graduates of Bath

Two graduates from the University have won prizes at the national Graduate 100 awards, presented at a dinner in London last week (Wednesday 15 September). Andrew Bacon won the Engineering award and Nick Shurey won the Architecture category, beating 13,000 graduate entries from more than 70 universities.

Dorchester students learn the secrets behind the perfect free kick

Dr Ken Bray (Mechanical Engineering) let Dorchester students into the secret of how to ‘bend it like Beckham’ in a Café Scientifique lecture at Thomas Hardye School. Dr Bray described the science behind the swerving free kick, talking about the physics behind how the ball spins and how to predict the flight of the ball taking into account the aerodynamics and force of the kick.

Vice-Chancellor welcomes Chinese delegation

The Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor welcomed a delegation from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the UK Chinese Embassy to the University on 16 September.

The Parade Bar is closed today (Friday 17 September) due to asbestos removal in 2 West. It will re-open on Monday (20 September).

Low carbon hemp house put to the test

Used to make paper, clothing and car body panels, hemp could also be used to build environmentally-friendly homes of the future say researchers at the University of Bath. A consortium, led by the BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials based at the University, has constructed a small building on the Claverton campus out of hemp-lime to test its properties as a building material.

£376k grant to support Bangladesh extreme poverty programme

The Government of Bangladesh and the UK Department for International Development have established a major programme to help one million people in Bangladesh lift themselves out of extreme poverty. The Centre for Development Studies has been awarded a grant of £376,000 so that two of its members, Dr Joe Devine and Professor Geof Wood, can support the lesson learning and advocacy activities of the programme.
