Proposed changes to Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS)

As you will already be aware from our previous web announcements, a package of proposed changes to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) has been made by the USS Joint Negotiating Committee, and approved by the USS Trustee Board. This is subject to a consultation of affected members and their representatives, in accordance with statutory regulations.

The period of consultation will run from Wednesday 20 October until Wednesday 22 December 2010.

If you are either an active member of USS, or are eligible to join, you should now have received your copy of the information to members entitled ‘Consultation on proposals for changes to USS’, which sets out the reasons for the proposed changes, details of the proposed changes and how you can provide your response (if you wish to).

You should also have received a letter from the Employers Pensions Forum entitled ‘USS – the need for reform’.

If you have not yet received these documents, or would like an additional copy, a link to the pdf versions can be found on the members' section of the USS website.

From 20 October, the members' section also contains other useful information including:

  • a question and answer database;
  • an interactive modeller which you can use to assess the impact of the changes;
  • a video/animation explaining the changes;
  • the opportunity to provide your response.
