Proposed changes to Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS)

As you will be aware from our previous web announcements, a package of proposed changes to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) has been made by the USS Joint Negotiating Committee, and approved by the USS Trustee Board.

This is subject to a consultation of affected members and their representatives, in accordance with statutory regulations.

The consultation period commenced on Wednesday 20 October and will close on Wednesday 22 December 2010.

If you are either an active member of USS, or are eligible to join, you will have received your copy of the information to members entitled ‘Consultation on proposals for changes to USS’, which sets out the reasons for the proposed changes, details of the proposed changes and how you can provide your response (if you wish to).

You should also have received a letter from the Employers Pensions Forum entitled ‘USS – the need for reform’.

If you have not received these documents, or would like an additional copy, pdf versions can be found on the members’ section of the USS website.

The University & College Union (UCU) have advised that details of the changes can be found on their local website.

A formal consultation meeting with the campus trade unions on the proposed changes was held on 3 November 2010.

UCU have reported that some members have experienced difficulties accessing the USS Website. If you are experiencing difficulties please let me know and I will take this up with USS on your behalf or alternatively, please forward your views to me and I will pass these to USS.

Equality Impact Assessment

An Equality Impact Assessment on the proposed changes has been undertaken and a PDF version is available on the HR website. If you have any comments on the Equality Impact Assessment, please send them to me by Friday 17 December 2010.
