Proposal for changes to English Language Centre

Message from Professor Kevin Edge, Deputy Vice-Chancellor:

I chaired a review of the Department of European Studies & Modern Languages (ESML) over the summer. I am now writing to seek your views on a proposal which has emerged from this review.

The proposal relates to the English Language Centre (ELC) which performs a very important service in preparing overseas students for study at the University.

It is proposed that responsibility for the English Language Centre should transfer from the Head of ESML to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching).

The Review Panel concluded that this would enable the ELC to focus its operations on achievement of the University's strategic objective of increasing overseas recruitment which has to be overseen and managed at University level.

Direct oversight by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching) is envisaged as a temporary measure for, say, twelve to eighteen months so that the best long-term organisational configuration of the ELC alongside other academic support services can be identified.

The Foreign Languages Centre will remain within ESML.

We would like to seek the views of those most closely associated with the ELC on this proposal.

If you wish to express a view, please email your response to as soon as possible and before Tuesday 7 December 2010.

Thank you for your help.
