The £1 million donation made by a graduate to the University of Bath to support research at the Centre for Chemical Sustainable Technologies is the lead case study in a new report published by the 1994 Group.
Developing the Future sets out some of the innovative ways 1994 Group universities are attracting philanthropic donations and features a series of case studies that show how 1994 institutions have been able to raise funds to improve facilities and provide opportunities to students from a wide range of backgrounds.
The report, which comes at time of great change for university funding, offers lessons to others seeking to maximise their fundraising efforts. In particular, it highlights the value of establishing frequent engagement with alumni.
Siôn Lutley, Director of Development & Alumni Relations, said: “I’m pleased that the gift made by Roger and Sue Whorrod has been chosen to highlight the ways in which philanthropic funding is having increasing impact at 1994 Group universities.
“Last year over £4.3 million was donated to the University of Bath by over 1,800 graduates, friends, charitable foundations and companies. We are very grateful for their generosity; the gifts are making a real difference both to the lives of students and the research undertaken by staff here in Bath.”
Executive Director at the 1994 Group, said: “With public investment tightening, it’s now more important than ever that higher education institutions fully explore every possible source of funds.
“This report sets out just a few of the excellent projects that 1994 Group universities are using to attract philanthropic donations. They show how alumni in particular are marking long term relationships with their alma mater with donations which provide opportunities for the students of the future.
“Much of this has been enhanced through the Government’s Match Funding Scheme. We look forward to this scheme continuing to complement the excellent work being done by universities.”
