Bath student to be first Manxman to visit Antarctica

Joe Kinrade, a PhD student from the University’s Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering, will spend nine days at the geographical South Pole as part of a six-week Antarctic research expedition studying GPS (Global Positioning System) signals in the Earth’s atmosphere. Joe will be the first person from the Isle of Man to set foot on the South Pole.

Vice-Chancellor appointed as Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset

Professor Glynis Breakwell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath, has been commissioned as a Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset. Professor Breakwell was commissioned on 10 November. The appointment was made by the Lord-Lieutenant Lady Gass.

Peter Blake launches Holburne Museum public appeal

Sir Peter Blake launched the Holburne Challenge, the Museum’s public appeal, which aims to raise £300,000 with the help of our community. This will help us complete the development project which will transform the Museum and what it can offer everyone.

Scientists to develop tougher plastics from plants

Scientists at the University of Bath and Tel Aviv University are working on a new project to improve the properties of plastics made from plants. The researchers, led by Matthew Davidson (Chemistry) and Moshe Kol (Tel Aviv University), are developing a new chemical catalyst to improve the process of making these plastics, making them stronger and more heat-resistant so they can be used for a wider range of objects such as engineering plastics for the automotive industry, microwavable trays and hot drinks cups.

Scholarship helps student follow in father’s footsteps

The first student to receive a Frank Wallace Scholarship in Automotive Engineering has just started his postgraduate studies at the University of Bath. Nic Zhang will receive funding from a scholarship set up in the memory of Professor Frank Wallace, a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University since its inception in 1966, who passed away last year.

URB wins two golds at this year’s National Student Radio Awards

URB took home two golds at the National Student Radio Awards which took place in IndigO2 in London on Thursday 11 November. The awards were won for Best Specialist Programming and Best Radio Chart Show for 2009-10.

Jennifer Veeren, an MSc graduate of the Advanced Programmes in Pharmaceutical Practice and Therapeutics received the Best Poster Award at the ‘16th International Social Pharmacy Workshop’ held at the University of Lisbon, Portugal.

Groundbreaking energy-saving project to be trialled at the University of Bath

For the first time in the UK, researchers from the University of Bath are working with RWE npower in a groundbreaking project exploring the potential energy savings of using a localised DC (Direct Current) electricity supply network. Professor Raj Aggarwal and Dr Miles Redfern, from the University’s Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering, are leading the project that will set up 50 computers in the University library to draw their energy from a specially created local DC network.

Bath Students’ Union speaks out about violence at national demo

Wednesday 10 November saw one of the largest student protests in decades hit London to speak out against the cuts to higher education. However, the loud and clear message being sent peacefully from the tens of thousands of students down the road from the Tory HQ has been overshadowed in the media by the few who decided to turn to violence in an attempt to get heard.

Helping poorer countries could combat climate change

The effects of global climate change could be minimised by transferring ‘best available’ low carbon technologies from the rich to the poor nations, according to new research at the University. Professor Geoffrey Hammond and PhD student Gemma Cranston (Mechanical Engineering) found that the main cause for the rise in average global temperatures seen in recent decades is the increasing emissions of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels for power and transport.

New KTA project – Catalysts for producing biodegradable plastics

The Knowledge Transfer Account has awarded a Knowledge Transfer Fellowship to Professor Matthew Davidson, Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies and Department of Chemistry. The project will explore the use of benign metal catalysts and the potential of scaling up laboratory-based results to a pilot process.
