Update from Council and Senate

 (1)        Council

 The following items were discussed at the recent meeting of University Council:

  • University Accounts: Council considered and approved the University Accounts for the year ended 31 July 2010.  Particular attention was drawn to the surplus for the year of £16.5m.
  • University of Bath Centre for the Arts: Council noted that the design for the arts building on campus had been revised to integrate plans for an Arts Theatre, remove the Ceramics Studio, provide high quality space for the Executive MBA and increase flexibility of space to support revenue generation activity, including summer schools and conferencing.  However, the primary remit of the project remained arts facility provision and it would be referred to henceforth as the ‘University of Bath Centre for the Arts’. 
  • Treasurer: Peter Wyman was appointed as Treasurer of the University for three years from 1 January 2011.  Roger Pedder was presented with a certificate in recognition of his service to the University both as Treasurer from 1 January 2008 and 31 December 2010 and as a co-opted member of Council between 1 August 2003 and 31 December 2007.
  • Equalities and Diversity: Council considered and noted the Annual Report on the University’s Single Equality Scheme and the Annual Report of the Equalities and Diversity Committee.

(2)        Senate

The following items were discussed at the recent meeting of University Senate:

  • Revision of QA53 Examination and Assessment Offences: Senate approved in principle:

The introduction of a mandatory training session and test of understanding of good academic writing practice, of plagiarism and associated assessment offences to be required of all students with the sanction of a bar to progression set at the next progression point falling after 1st October 2011;

The introduction of an abbreviated process for the handling of some cases of admitted misconduct by a department-level committee to be available in cases occurring after 1 October 2011.

The detailed implementation of the above will be overseen by the Learning, Teaching and Quality Committee.

  • Graduate School Governance Structure: The membership and terms of reference of the Graduate School Committee which will be established for each Faculty were approved with effect from 1 January 2011.
  • University Teaching Awards: Senate approved minor amendment of the criteria of the University Teaching Awards.
  • Annual Report of the Research Postgraduate Ombudsman: Senate noted the report of the Research Postgraduate Ombudsman for 2009/10, together with an associated action plan devised by the University Research Students Committee. 
  • Formal Adoption of the Licensing Arrangement for Collaborative Provision: Following the successful completion of a pilot scheme, Senate agreed that licensing be formally adopted as an established form of arrangement for collaborative provision.
  • Professor Emeritus: The title of Professor Emeritus was conferred on
