The Board of Directors of the Optical Society of America (OSA) has elevated Dr Fetah Benabid, from the Department of Physics, to the rank of an “OSA fellow 2011”.
The award is given to him for his ‘pioneering contributions in developments of hollow-core photonic crystal fibres and their incorporation in scientific and technological applications.’
The nomination recognises the work Dr Benabid has undertaken over the past 10 years at the University, during which his research has included a number of theoretical and technical breakthroughs.
His work has resulted in a number of inventions with significant impact on optical science. Inventions include a new type of hollow-core photonic crystal fibre, a new type of optical guidance and a new photonic device called ‘Photonic Microcell’ with research into its use in developing highly efficient multi-line laser sources and highly portable fibre devices for laser frequency metrology and optical processing.
OSA selected 64 new fellows this year, each of which will be recognised individually at meetings throughout 2011.
“OSA Fellows consistently demonstrate their strong leadership in the field of optics and photonics by pioneering innovative research and new technologies,” said OSA President Christopher Dainty. “These talented individuals contribute invaluable knowledge and discoveries to the field. On behalf of OSA, I extend my appreciation to Fetah for his hard work and congratulate him on his accomplishments.”
