Graduates take Bath by Storm

Two University of Bath graduates who founded a marketing business in the city are celebrating their success in the 2011 Bath Life Awards.

David Kelly and Adam Pope, founders of Storm web marketing agency, picked up the Best New Business Award for their company, with fellow director Steve Thorne.

David (Business Administration) and Adam (Computer Science) both graduated in 2009. Storm Consultancy now employs six staff combining design, development and business consultancy skills. Their average age is just 25.

The company has a list of clients in the West Country and also runs Bath Digital which it set up to educate local businesses about best practices in promoting and succeeding on the internet.

Storm was competing against a range of other marketing, retail and professional service companies. The Bath Life magazine judging panel described Storm as “a bright, young, dynamic team who have clearly made their mark on Bath in a short time.”

David Kelly said: “The whole team is thrilled to have won the Best New Business award - we've come a long way in a very short time. I think it's a heads up that we're worth keeping an eye on and that as a team, we've got huge potential.”

Both graduates acknowledge their time at University as preparing them for business. “Studying Business Administration gave me the opportunity to undertake two placements,” said Dave. “Given my aim of starting my own company, I made sure I placed myself with small businesses from whom I could learn the most about the first 18 months of business. The opportunity was invaluable.”

Adam added: “The Computer Science course at Bath favoured practical knowledge and teamwork over complex theory. That balance meant that I came out of uni immediately able to solve real world problems and deliver projects to clients."
