Staff and students who use Claverton Hill to drive to and from the A36 are being asked to watch their speed on this narrow stretch of road, and to take extra care in icy conditions.
With the inter-semester break over, there will inevitably be more traffic coming to and from the Claverton campus – especially in the early morning (8-9am) and early evening (5-6pm).
A particular concern which has been raised by local residents and members of Claverton Parish Council in the past is the speed some vehicles travel along Claverton Hill – from above the American Museum to the junction of the A36.
Claverton Hill is a narrow, largely tree lined, twisting country lane where driving has to be undertaken with care.
As its a minor road it is not gritted routinely during winter months and can become very treacherous or even impassable when there is ice or snow.
Local residents are particularly concerned that excessive speed on this narrow and steep stretch of road is putting at risk the safety of other car drivers and pedestrians. The risk is real and a number of minor accidents have been witnessed in the past year.
Please can all staff and students using this route ensure that they maintain a sensible speed (ie well below 30mph) and are in a position to stop safely should the need arise.
