Managed Print Service: Project update

During 2011, we will continue to roll out our new Managed Print Service to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and environmental impact of our printing.

It is anticipated that this will save the University around £250,000 per year in printing costs. We are working closely with our partner, Canon, to deliver the benefits outlined above.

The first phase of the Managed Print Service was successfully implemented in September 2010, providing new equipment for:

  • Library & Learning Centre
  • Mechanical Engineering Design Activity Centre
  • BUCS
  • 3 PC labs in the School of Management

The second phase of the project implementation is now underway with the following target dates:

  • 14 February 2011 - Holburne Museum
  • 1 March 2011 - BUCS Helpdesk/ITP & Audio Visual, Estates - Estates building only
  • 2 March 2011 - Division for Lifelong Learning and Learning &T eaching Enhancement Office - Wessex House level 5
  • 7 March 2011 - Faculty of Engineering & Design - central administration
  • 8 March 2011 - Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences - central administration
  • 9 March 2011 - Faculty of Science - central administration
  • 10 March 2011 – Bath Ventures, Wessex House

The third phase of the project will then see the service extended to the remaining professional services over a 6-7 week period, commencing 14 March 2011.

We recognise that academic departments have specific issues relating to:

  • research-related printing equipment;
  • security and confidentiality;
  • demand on academic time.

Consequently, with the agreement of the participating departments, phase four will involve a prototype service in three academic buildings:

  • Architecture and Civil Engineering (6 East)
  • Social & Policy Sciences (3 East)
  • Chemistry (1 South)

As part of the prototype service, we will be developing a ‘Q&A’ sheet to provide academic colleagues with further guidance, particularly in the context of equipment purchased through research grants and K accounts.

Once the prototype service has been evaluated, the Managed Print Service will be rolled out to the remaining academic departments.
