Report of University Council meeting - 3 Mar 2011

The following items were discussed at the recent meeting of University Council:

  • Undergraduate Tuition Fees and Access Agreement for 2012/13: Council gave preliminary consideration to the background and principles to the setting of undergraduate tuition fees and the University's Access Agreement for 2012/13. This will be considered further by the Finance Committee on 16 March and Council on 30 March 2011 on receipt of further guidance and information, notably from the Office for Fair Access.
  • Department of European Studies & Modern Languages name change: Council approved the change of name of the Department of European Studies & Modern Languages to the 'Department of Politics, Languages & International Studies' with effect from 1 August 2011. This decision has been taken after extensive consultation and will enable the department to reposition itself to focus on areas of proven strength in light of changing patterns of demand at undergraduate level and the changing landscape for research. The transfer of responsibility for the English Language Centre from the Head of Department to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching) was noted.
  • Revision of the University's People Strategy for 2010/11 to 2013/14: Council approved the University's People Strategy for 2010/11 to 2013/14. The aim was to create a new Strategy that set the key priorities for the University's staff over the next four years. The Strategy promotes three strategic aims:
  1. An engaged, diverse and high quality workforce, who are led and supported to realise their potential and achieve the highest standards.
  2. Our capacity for adaptability to change and ongoing improvement.
  3. High quality leadership and management.The People Strategy was formally launched on 9 March 2011.
  • Staff Survey 2011: Council noted the arrangements for the 2011 Staff Survey. The importance of providing feedback to staff on the findings of the survey and regular future survey intervals was emphasised. Further information.
  • University Carbon Management Plan: Council approved the University's Carbon Management Plan. This outlines the types of projects that the University will be implementing over the coming years in order to make significant reductions in our carbon emissions. The University's target is to reduce the Scope 1 & 2 CO2 emissions from its activities by 43% by 2020 from a 2005 baseline. A 9% reduction has already been achieved notwithstanding the growth of the campus. Further information.
  • Closure of 25m Pool: Council noted with regret that the 25m pool had been closed permanently for safety reasons following receipt of a structural report on the condition of the pool roof.
  • Ordinance 22: Council agreed revisions to the Intellectual Property Policy. (Separate announcement).
