A-level students enjoy learning about green science at Bath

As part of the Department of Chemistry’s Millennium Lectures series a Green Science Symposium was held on 16th March 2011, attracting over 200 A-level students from across the region.

Students enjoyed a ‘hands on’ demonstration session in the Department’s teaching laboratories followed by an afternoon of lectures in green science.

Four lectures were given, by leading young academics from the Universities of Bath, Oxford, Imperial College London and Cardiff. Topics included sustainable resources for future plastic and fuel production, hydrogen fuel cells and algal batteries.

The students also took part in a poster session alongside PhD students from the departments of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering on the theme of sustainability.

This event was the first of its kind held at Bath and provided an informative and enjoyable afternoon for all who attended, giving students a chance to learn about the world of scientific research and to see where a degree in science could take them.

The Millennium lectures are an annual series of public science lectures run by a committee of PhD students from the Department of Chemistry with the aim of engaging the public and promoting the exciting and innovative research carried out across the physical sciences.

The 2010/11 Millennium lectures committee included Caroline Evans, Gareth Lamb, Jennifer Peed, Emily Skinner and James Taylor.

The committee would like to thank TMO Renewables, AstraZeneca, TCI Chemicals, Syngenta, Lily, The Society for Experimental Biology and The Royal Society of Chemistry for their sponsorship of the series.
