Uni of Bath shortlisted for two Times Higher leadership awards

We are pleased to announce that the University has been shortlisted for two Times Higher Education (THE) Leadership & Management Awards 2011.

The categories we have been shortlisted in are Outstanding University Fundraising Team and the THE’s top honour of Outstanding Leadership & Management Team.

The shortlists were announced in this week’s THE and the winners of this year’s awards will be announced at a ceremony in London on 16 June.

Outstanding University Fundraising Team

Each year for the last four years the Development & Alumni Relations team has worked with others to raise record levels of philanthropic funding for the University through a combination of hard-work, the introduction of a very professional approach to every aspect of the University’s fundraising and an increasingly innovative range of new programmes.

The 2009/10 year in particular was exceptional, both for the headline results achieved in funds raised and for the introduction of various new initiatives that engaged new and existing donors, especially the scholarship and donor stewardship programme.

Siôn Lutley, Director of our Development & Alumni Relations Office, said: “I’m delighted that the hard work of many people not only in the Development & Alumni Relations Team but across the University has been recognised in this way by the THE Awards.

“Successful fundraising is very much a team effort – from the student telethon callers through to the many academics and volunteers who commit to building strong relationships with the University’s 2,000 donors.”

Outstanding Leadership & Management Team

The University’s entry for this award drew attention to the development of templates which were put together by the Working Group on Business Processes (Academic Registrar, Director of HR and Director of Finance). These are documents that record all stages of a student’s journey through the University – from admissions through to a career, and including everything in between! Putting these documents together required input from staff all over the University, particularly Directors of Administration, as we agreed what activities are core to the University’s business and how best to deliver them.

Alison Price, Academic Registrar, said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for this prestigious THE award. Our joint efforts to improve University processes have resulted in more effective, streamlined ways of working and it is therefore entirely appropriate that this collective hard work and commitment is recognised by the THE.”

Chair of Council, Mr Peter Troughton, supported the submission for the award: “I believe the application of business process re-engineering in this way demonstrates the Group’s openness to new methodologies and puts the University on a sound business footing for the future.

“As someone with an extensive background in business, I see this innovation as combining the strengths of business with the rigour of academia and am pleased to draw attention to the Working Group’s outstanding leadership, which has been critical to its delivery.”

Ann Mroz, editor of the THE, said: “Our annual awards always serve as a reminder of the extraordinary quality and dedication of those working in our universities and colleges.

“This year is no exception. Our sector, like every other, has already gone through some tough times and is facing more turbulence as the new funding regime beds in.

“But a glance at the shortlist for our Leadership and Management Awards is enough to instil confidence that we have the right people in place to continue to prosper and deliver the world-class higher education for which the country is rightly renowned.”
