University Fundraising Team scoops top award

The University’s fundraising team has been honoured with the Outstanding University Fundraising Team award at the THE Leadership & Management Awards 2011.

Siôn Lutley, Director of Development & Alumni Relations and Gavin Maggs Deputy Director & Head of Major Gifts collected the award at a ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Thursday night.

The team impressed the judges with their exceptional year in 2009-10, which saw philanthropic donations totalling £4.3 million raised by the University. This was a 159 per cent above its target and represented an increase of 120 per cent on the year before. Included in this total were the two largest non-legacy donations the University has ever received – notably the first gift of more than £1 million – and these were accompanied by a 20 per cent increase in the overall number of donors.

Other achievements included the introduction of a bespoke philanthropic scholarship programme which led to over 200 named scholarships being awarded to students at Bath in the 2010-11 academic year, which was twice the previous year’s total, and an 80 per cent donor participation rate among lay members of the University’s Council.

Judge Susie Hill, Director of Development & Alumni Relations at the University of Exeter said: "Bath has shown what a small fundraising team can achieve when they work together and take a systematic approach to fundraising."

Siôn Lutley said: "I am delighted that the THE Awards have recognised the many members of staff from across the institution and our volunteers who have played an important part in transforming the University’s fundraising activities. I’d also like to thank our many donors whose gifts are making such a difference both to the lives of students and also the world-leading research undertaken at Bath."
