Karen Thompson and Kevin Kite win Staff Recognition Awards

The winners of the 2011 Staff Recognition Awards were Karen Thompson from the Students’ Union and Kevin Kite, a Security Officer.

  • Karen Thompson is a Volunteer Support Worker in the Students’ Union and has worked at the University since 2004.

She was nominated by a group of students (including one of next year’s Students’ Union sabbaticals) primarily for her work in support of Student Community Action, and in particular the annual Romania Aid Trip, where her determination has ensured that these trips have been able to go ahead. In the past year she has flown out to Paris (in her own time) to receive the hitchers in the Rag Paris Hitch, when there were insufficient student volunteers to do so.

  • Kevin Kite has worked as a Security Officer since 2001.

Kevin was proposed for the award by Paul Brooks of the Students’ Union. Kevin is recognised as being an excellent Security Officer, and he has also made a valuable contribution to wider life of the University through his work as Trades Union steward. His integrity and common sense, and his reputation as an ‘honest broker’, have been appreciated by both his trades union and the University, as well as those whom he has represented.
