Three Chemistry academics appointed Professors

Chris Frost, Tony James and Frank Marken, all from the Department of Chemistry, have been promoted to the post of Professor.

With over 500 publications between them, their combined contribution to the field is substantial.

Professor Frost joined the Department of Chemistry in 1996 as a Lecturer and was promoted to Reader in Organic Chemistry in 2007 and now to Professor in 2011.

He has made some creative and important findings through his research, which involves sustainable approaches to synthesis through efficient catalysis.  In addition to this, Chris leads an inter-disciplinary research programme developing a bioelectronic approach to the detection of specific DNA segments and protein markers. This technology contributed to the launch of a University spin–out, Atlas Genetics Ltd, a diagnostic company developing ultra-rapid point-of-care tests for a range of infectious diseases.

He has published over 85 papers and currently holds an EPSRC Knowledge Transfer Fellowship focusing on the biofunctionalisation of organometallic complexes.

Professor James, who has recently been awarded a Haitian Scholarship at Dalian University of Technology, moved to the Department of Chemistry in 2000. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2005, Reader in 2007 and now Professor in 2011. His research interests include molecular recognition, molecular assemblies and sensor design.

As well as this he has been a Visiting Professor at Tsukuba, Osaka and Kyushu Universities and is a Guest Professor at East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) and Xiamen University.

He has over 130 publications, including one book, seven book chapters and 126 papers in international peer reviewed journals. He is also the named inventor on 16 international patents.

Prior to his arrival at Bath, Professor Marken obtained a PhD degree at the RWTH Aachen, looking at properties of triple-decker metal complexes and then started to work on electrochemical processes of solids during a two-year research post at La Trobe University in Melbourne.

He moved to Bath in 2004 with a research portfolio covering electrochemical kinetics, sensors, electro-synthesis, and energy conversion. He was promoted to Reader in 2008 and now to Professor in 2011.

With research interests including the development of novel electro-analytical and electro-chemical technologies, Frank has published more than 200 publications since 2000.
