Would you like to carry the Olympic Torch?

How would you like to play a part in sporting history by carrying the Olympic Flame in the run up to London 2012?

To celebrate the Games coming to London, the University has teamed up with Samsung, a presenting partner of the Olympic Torch Relay, to find inspiring students and staff members who will be given a chance to carry the Olympic Flame in the 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.

Bath is one of 31 educational establishments in the UK that was approached by Samsung. The 90 university representatives will be part of the 8,000 Torchbearers who will pass on the Olympic Flame when it arrives in Land’s End on 18 May, 2012, and starts its 70-day journey across the UK.

Professor Kevin Edge, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, said: “It is wonderful news that Samsung has approached us with such a great opportunity, and we are absolutely delighted that we can offer our students and staff a once-in-a-lifetime experience in recognition of their hard work and contribution to the community.”

Mr David Song, Managing Director, UK&I, Samsung Electronics Ltd, said: “Building upon our long-term partnership with the higher education sector in the UK, and as an Olympic Torch Relay Presenting Partner, it was only natural to work with the University of Bath to find London 2012 Torchbearers.

“We are keen to share Samsung’s passion for the Olympic Games with students and trust the universities will select those that always go the extra mile to make London 2012 an Olympic Games for everyone.”

To have a chance to carry the Olympic Flame students and staff can either nominate themselves or a colleague by completing a simple online nomination form.

The form asks you to state why the nominee deserves to be selected in 100 words or less. The panel will be looking for individuals who have made a difference to either the University or the community through volunteering, supporting the work of others, leading new projects or providing a service above the expectations of their daily role.

Nominations open today (Monday, 26 September) and they must be in before the closing date on Friday, 7 October.

An independent panel will then judge those nominations before selecting the three Bath nominations to put forward to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games.
