BIME annual lecture: Changing attitudes to disability

The Bath Institute of Medical Engineering (BIME) is hosting a lecture on the subject of the changing attitudes to disability in the East Building Lecture Theatre 1.1 on Friday 7 October at 7pm.

The event, which is BIME’s 43rd annual lecture, will be an ‘in conversation’ format between BIME President Baroness Masham of Ilton, who is also the Founder and President of the Spinal Injuries Association, and Dr Elizabeth White, Head of Research & Development at the College of Occupational Therapists, who will also chair the lecture.

Baroness Masham is an active member of the House of Lords. She is a wheelchair user, following a riding accident in 1958 when she was 21 and has a particular concern in issues surrounding health and disability. As well as being Founder and President of Spinal Injuries Association, she is Vice President of The Patients Association, a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, and Chair of the Cross Party Health Group and Patient and Public Involvement in Health Group.

Baroness Masham will reflect on her work in the House, changing attitudes to disability and the challenges of age and dependency.

The debate will also discuss whether quicker provision leads to improved health and wellbeing and can create savings for society and whether there is a link between legislation and the experiences of service users.

The lecture is open to the public with a drinks reception from 6.30pm, followed by a buffet and exhibition showing work and products produced by BIME.

Tickets are available from Gail Gillespie, Events & Ceremonies Office, East Building 2.2, University of Bath, Bath BA2 7AY. Telephone 01225 383659 or email g.gillespie@bath.ac.uk.

Tickets for the lecture are free. Tickets for the buffet and exhibition are £10.
