The Campaign for Social Science South West Regional Roadshow

The Vice-Chancellor welcomed a packed Council Chamber to the South West Regional Roadshow of the Campaign for Social Science on 17 November.

Professor Michael Harloe, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Salford and an eminent sociologist of urban and regional development, highlighted the international excellence of UK social science and stressed the value of the social sciences to society.  Stephen Anderson, Executive Director of the Academy of Social Sciences, summarised the aims and activities of the campaign, and the aspirations to ensure a strong voice for social sciences in government and policy debates and developments.

Jane Millar, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Professor of Social Policy emphasised the employability of social sciences graduates and the relationship between science, engineering and social sciences.

She said: "Social Sciences and STEM disciplines are, to my mind, linked and should not be placed in competition with each other, either for funding or for legitimacy."

There was a lively discussion ranging from issues of social sciences teaching in schools and FE, to the values of social sciences, to the impact of social sciences on economy and society.  You can find out more about the Campaign, and pledge financial support, at the Campaign website.
