Pharmacy lecturer on Australian tour

Dr Roland Jones of the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology has been elected by the British Pharmacological Society as their Anglo-Australian visiting lecturer for 2011.

This highly prestigious appointment involves a three week lecture tour around the major universities and research institutions of Australia, and will cumulate with a plenary lecture at the annual ASCEPT (Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists) meeting in Perth.

During the lecture tour Dr Jones is presenting insights on his research into the mechanisms of nerve connections in the brain. His talk will explain how these mechanisms can go wrong and cause epilepsy, and how anti-epileptic drugs work to correct this.

Dr Jones’ plenary lecture will focus on his research over the past ten years in the field of anticonvulsant medicines.

He will address the changes in approach to this science, outlining how his research has led to scientists now looking at the human nerve network as a whole when assessing the impact of drugs, rather than at small, isolated sections.

Dr Jones said: “Having spent three years working in Australia during the earlier part of my career I am absolutely thrilled to have been appointed to undertake this tour and visit previous colleagues who are now working at institutions across Australia. The appointment is a great honour, and I am very much looking forward to it.”

Dr Jones left for Australia on Monday, 14 November, and will spend three weeks in the country. He is visiting institutions in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, before heading to New Zealand to visit Auckland before returning to Perth for the ASCEPT plenary talk.
