International event brings mathematicians together in Bath

Mathematicians from across Europe have visited the University this week to take part in a mid-term meeting for a leading European mathematical research programme.

The programme, named ITN FIRST (Initial Training Network for Fronts and Interfaces in Science and Technology) has €4m of European funding, and involves the training of 18 research students within eight education institutions across the continent.

The event was managed by a Bath team of Professor Chris Budd, Dr Johannes Zimmer and Professor Victor Galaktionov, all of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, with invaluable support from Department Coordinator Sarah Hardy.

The event involved each of the 18 students giving a talk about their individual research. Research students Hüseyin Koçak, Amine Chakhchoukh and Manh Hong Duong, all based in Bath, took part alongside their peers from across Europe.

EU officials were present to monitor the FIRST students’ work, and to plan future activities for the programme.

Professor Budd said: “Being part of this project is hugely beneficial to us here at the University of Bath as it allows us to collaborate in mathematical research with seven other European institutions.

“We have three research students based here, and each student involved in the programme gets an opportunity to spend time in at least one of the other institutions involved, broadening the scope of their studies and research.

“This is a key piece of EU funding for the development of mathematical research and we’re pleased to be a partner in the project.”

The group has various activities planned for 2012, starting with a 3-day workshop in March with industry partners Siemens at the Friedrich Alexander University, Erlangen Nuremberg, in Bavaria, Germany.
