Reminder! Watch out for cyclists

Motorists and cyclists are reminded to take extra care on the roads surrounding the campus, especially at this time of year when visibility is poor.

It has been brought to our attention that the junction where you turn right into the main Uni entrance (Convocation Avenue) is particularly hazarous for cyclists, as motorists continuing along the road (towards Bathwick Hill or North Road) can travel at high speeds inappropriate for the general safety of all road users.

A cyclist writes: “I have cycled into campus for over 10 years, and rarely a week goes by without a motorist overtaking me as I first signal, then slowly move out to turn into the University. I have nearly had, on occasion, my right arm removed by motorists who insist on passing me, simultaneously realising that taking my arm off is less inconvenient than hitting the bollards.”

If you are a motorist who continues past the main campus entrance to use the Quarry Road access, please slow down in this area – this will also help to reduce the speed of non-University traffic.

Cyclists – Be seen, be safe

We have also been contacted recently by a number of motorists highlighting the dangers of not being able to see cyclists if they are wearing dark colours.

Please could cyclists consider increasing their visibility by ensuring all lights are in good working order and additionally wearing light or high-vis clothing.

Update on Rainbow Wood path

You may have recently seen an article in the Bath Chronicle:Cyclists will be able to use path“.

The article is a little misleading as it suggests a consultation is currently underway to gauge public opinion about redesignation of the footpath (that runs between the Claverton Down campus and Combe Down) into a bridleway.

We have contacted BANES who clairifed that a small scale, informal consultation has been carried out, and since there was adequate local interest to pursue the redesignation, Cabinet approval is being sought to authorise the bridleway creation.

When authorisation has been obtained the legal order will be advertised and this will provide another opportunity to comment on the proposal.

We will keep you informed when this happens.
