Apps Crunch: The Finale

Students will pitch for the chance to turn ideas for mobile apps into software reality, at the Finale of the Students’ Union’s Apps Crunch competition on Thursday 8 March (6-8pm East building).

The competition is running as part of the Bath Digital Festival and the student teams will make their pitch to a panel of industry experts. They’ll be judged on their business and technical skills.

The winners will get VIP access to attend the Digital Festival’s international X Media Lab and work on their app with industry leaders Ralph Simon (mobile strategist for Lady Gaga, Madonna, U2 and the World Cup; Inventor of the Ringtone) and Jeff Gomez (one of the world’s leading transmedia producers including Avatar, Tron, Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean).

The prize also includes free consultancy with developers at IntoHand, a Bath based firm run that develops mobile apps and software and was founded by Bath graduate and MBA Stuart Scott. Their client list includes Disney, Chelsea Football Club, Tesco Mobile and the Bath Rugby Club.

The team will receive their award at The Sparkies, Bath’s Premier Tech Awards, to be held at Komedia (Wednesday 21 March).

Andrew Seed, Enterpirse Administrator and Bath physics graduate, said: “We are expecting lots of quality entries from students across departments including interdisciplinary teams. The next million pound app could well come from students who have entered Apps Crunch. We invite staff, students and members of the public to come along and enjoy a great evening and watch our panel of experts pick a winner.”

The competition was open to teams of students of any discipline and they have been able to attend an apps crunch surgery to get expert advice on technical issues and business questions.

The judging panel includes:

  • Mike Ellis – Director of Bath-based digital consultancy firm “thirty8 digital“  and organiser of the upcoming Bath Digital Festival
  • Richard Godfrey – Founder & CEO of Bath-based software firm iPrinciples, whose portolio includes developing mobile applications for Windows Phones
  • David Maher Roberts – CEO of The Filter, a Bath company that specialises in content optimisation for customers on the web
  • Stuart Scott – Founder & CEO of Intohand, a company that develops bespoke mobile applications and also the tools for people to develop their own

There will be light refreshments and also a chance to meet the competitors and industry experts. The event will be held at the East building from 6-8pm. It’s free but please sign up.

Staff and students are also invited to attend the X Media Lab conference on Friday Friday 16 March from 9am-5pm at the Bath Assembly Rooms.
