It is with much sadness that we report the death of Kris (Kaushik) Shah, BUCS Network Manager, after a short illness.

Born in Nairobi, Kenya, Kris moved to the UK in the 1960s. After a period working at the University of Bristol, he joined the emerging world of University of Bath IT in 1976. These were the pioneering years of discovery and development in shared computing, when Kris was heavily involved in keeping the behind-the-scenes, sometimes primitive computer technology running.

Over the years his role expanded to encompass the implementation and continual improvement of a highly resilient network infrastructure, in response to the University’s growing dependence on network and Internet connectivity.

Intent on not compromising his personal commitment to a healthy planet, Kris always sought to find the most environmentally friendly way forward for IT. One of his projects was to mastermind the plan to use existing sewers for extensive network cabling within the City, thus avoiding disruptive and expensive excavation work; the University was a finalist in the 2008 e-Government National Awards scheme for this innovative solution.

More recently Kris oversaw the development of BUCS’ new back-up data centre, opting for an innovative cooling system for the server racks rather than the entire room, combined with a fresh air cooling system instead of energy-intensive air conditioning units.

Kris was known and loved for his gentle humour, integrity and friendship by all his colleagues within and beyond the University. We express our thanks and bid farewell to one of the true stalwarts of the IT revolution, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his wife and family. He will be greatly missed.

We will publish details of the funeral on the University Internal Homepage when they are available.
