Be the best student traders at Spitalfields!

Bath’s student shop competition is going national! If you think you can be part of a winning Bath team to run a successful stall at London’s world famous Spitalfields market, then the Uni Pop Shop competition is for you.

Uni Pop Shop, organised by the Students' Union, is following in the tradition of some of the UK’s biggest high street names that began life on a market stall, from Marks & Spencer, to Tesco’s, and of course Lord Alan Sugar.

In the style of The Apprentice your team will need to make the most money in just one day of trading. You’ll be competing against four other student teams from the Universities of Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey, all part of the SETsquared partnership.

The competition will launch in London on Wednesday 27 June and teams will battle it out at Spitalfields in the heart of the East End on Thursday 28 June.

Each team will then give a presentation on what they’ve learnt, at the at the Grand Finale event on Friday 29 June. The Apprentice 2011 winner and Bath graduate Tom Pellereau will present the prizes.

Your accommodation and travel will be paid for and you’ll be given £300 as a start-up loan. Win the competition and the profits are yours to keep. There’s also a prize for the team that runs the best digital marketing competition.

Only one team of six students can represent Bath, so the Students’ Union is running a pitching competition on Tuesday 24 April and Thursday 26 April to select the team.

The chosen Bath team will then get expert mentoring before they head to Spitalfields from Gavin Eddy, local business entrepreneur who founded Frome’s flourishing artisan market.

To be in with a chance of going to London you need to email Banter by 12 noon on Monday 23 April saying what your team proposes to sell and the names of the team members. You can choose to sell anything except food.

When you make your five-minute pitch to judges from the Students’ Union you’ll need to be prepared to present clear financial information, a marketing plan and a risk assessment.

To enter you must:

  • Be a current student (undergraduate or postgraduate)
  • Be available on the pitching and competition dates outlined above
  • Email Banter by 12 noon on Monday 23 April with your product idea and names of the six team members
