Professor J. Grant Buchanan died on Tuesday morning at the age of 85 following a short stay in Dorothy House.
For many years and until very recently, Grant was a daily visitor to campus and the Claverton Rooms. He had been a Visiting Professorial Fellow in the Department of Chemistry ever since his retirement in 1991 from Heriot-Watt University, where he had been Professor of Organic Chemistry and Head of Department.
While in Bath he was editor of Carbohydrate Research, gave undergraduate lectures on carbohydrate chemistry, took organic tutorial groups, supervised research projects and continued to be passionate about chemistry until the very end. He gave great service to the Department of Chemistry but also interacted with research colleagues in Biology and Pharmacy and Pharmacology.
His deep knowledge of the literature, scholarship, infectious enthusiasm, collegiality and warm humanity will be missed.
The funeral will be at Haycombe Crematorium on Monday 23 April at 3.15pm. The family request no flowers, but suggest that donations may be sent to Dorothy House Hospice.
Professor Ian Williams, Department of Chemistry
