The Bath Latin American Network (BATLAM) is welcoming the ambassadors of Mexico, Chile and Colombia to a special conference to mark the rise of a new international partnership between Latin America and China.
The conference, taking place in 3 East 3.5 on Wednesday at 1.15pm, will discuss the Pacific Alliance, a new Latin American organisation that aims to boost trade partnerships with Asia and a topic of increased relevance at regional and international levels.
The event is open to all students and staff with an interest in politics, economics, Latin America, the rise of Asia, and foreign affairs.
The conference will open with a speech from, Professor Jane Millar, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for (Research), followed by speeches from the ambassadors and will end with a question and answer session.
Mauricio Rodríguez, the ambassador of Colombia for the UK holds a degree in Business Administration and is the author of six books on management, economics and leadership.
He is the founder and former director of Portafolio, Colombia’s most prominent economic and financial newspaper, and has been a journalist for other media as well as serving as a member of the Executive Committees and Boards of Directors of several organizations within the media, business, health and cultural sectors in Colombia, Venezuela, The United States and Italy. He is also a former President and Professor of several of Colombia’s most prominent academic institutions (Universidad de los Andes and CESA business school).
The ambassador of Chile Tomás Müller is an engineer who graduated at Chile’s Universidad Católica with further studies at MIT, in Boston. Linked to financial activities, he begun working for Citibank in Venezuela and later was instructed to reopen the bank’s offices in Chile. After several years as Citibank Chile CEO, in 1985 he founded with a partner the Inversiones Inmobiliarias Trust (IM Trust) and helped to make a success of the enterprise.
Mexico ambassador Eduardo Medina Mora Icaza has served as a Member of the Public Security Cabinet and of the National Security Council; Secretary of State for Public Security and Director General of the Centre for Investigation and National Security.
In the private sector he was Corporate Director of Strategic Planning and Deputy Director General of DESC Group and he coordinated the legal advisory group to the Mexican Government during the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiations.
Professor Jane Millar said: “We are delighted that the ambassadors of Mexico, Chile and Colombia are coming to our campus to discuss this landmark partnership between Latin America and Asia. It is a great opportunity for our staff and students to learn more about this important world region.”
