Final year Biochemistry student, Alexander Pool, has been re-elected as the youngest ever chair of the Amnesty International National Conference and AGM.
Alex was the first student and youngest person to ever chair the Amnesty International National Conference and AGM this weekend in Manchester. Attracting over 530 delegates the three day event directs the policy and direction of the human rights organisation within the UK.
Amnesty International is a human rights organisation with over 3 million members worldwide. Campaigning on issues such as refugee and asylum seekers through to stop violence against women and controlling the arms trade.
Alex was one of the first ever youth delegates to attend the AGM when he was just 14. Since then he has now attended 8 AGMs having taken key roles over recent years. He has sat on one of the three sub-committees to the board for five years. Alex was elected chair last year, overseeing the whole event, controlling the debates and plenary sessions.
Alex said “It’s a huge honour to be the youngest person to chair the AGM; it is such an inspirational event, bringing together people from all over the country to discuss and debate the issues that are close to our hearts. To be re-elected is a privilege and I’m really looking forward to next year”.
Alex was re-elected by a landslide majority to chair the conference next year in Warwick. He was also elected earlier this year as the Student Unions’ Vice President – Education for next year.
