Death of Professor J. Grant Buchanan

Professor J. Grant Buchanan died on Tuesday morning, at the age of 85, following a short stay in Dorothy House. The funeral will be at Haycombe Crematorium on Monday 23 April at 3.15pm. The family request no flowers, but suggest that donations may be sent to Dorothy House Hospice.

Olympic Torch’s journey through Bath to start on campus

The Olympic Flame will begin the Bath leg of its journey on campus: Starting from outside the East building, the flame will be carried past the Sports Training Village and along Norwood Avenue before turning right on to Claverton Down Road towards the city centre. Details of road closures and changes to bus routes will be published shortly.

Tim Bilham awarded honorary position by Severn Postgraduate Deanery

Tim Bilham, Director of Studies for the MSc in Primary Care in the Department for Health, has been appointed to an honorary position of Associate Postgraduate Dean within the School of Primary Care of the Severn Postgraduate Deanery. Tim said: “The Severn School of Primary Care is consistently ranked as one of the top GP training schemes nationally in terms of the calibre of its intake and in the results of its trainees. The MSc in Primary Care is designed to enable high performing GPs to extend their expertise intellectually and practically and apply it to the rapidly evolving primary care environment.”

Prestigious civil engineering awards for ACE professor & graduate

Professor Doug King (Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering) has won the New Civil Engineer/Association for Consultancy & Engineering Outstanding Achievement Award for 2012 for his contribution to sustainable building design. At the same ceremony Phil Anthony Moutousamy, who graduated in 2008 with a first class MEng in Civil & Architectural Engineering, was named the 2012 NCE/ACE Young Consultant of the Year. Congratulations to both!

Final year pyschology student Elizabeth Sheils is going to Westminster to lobby parliament for more funds to find a cure for type 1 diabetes.

Biology PhD student wins Panton Fellowship to promote open data in science

Ross Mounce, a third year PhD postgrad studying the impact of fossils in phylogenetics, has been awarded a Panton Fellowship. The fellowships are a new initiative to support scientists who promote open access to data.

University launches new Public Engagement Unit

We have been awarded £300,000 to set up a new Public Engagement Unit to help us promote our research. The award from Research Councils UK will fund projects including: training staff in aspects of public engagement; setting up a new website; and hosting an awards ceremony to reward staff involved in public engagement activities.
