Council Report - 28 June 2012

The following items were discussed at the recent meeting of Council:

  • University of Bath Centre for the Arts: Council received a presentation from Peter Clegg and Jo Wright of Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, Architects, on the plans for the University of Bath Centre for the Arts. More information about the Centre.
  • Staff Survey Update: Council considered and noted progress with implementation of the outcome of the 2011 Staff Survey. The next survey has been brought forward to March 2013. Staff will be provided with feedback on progress, with implementation of the results of the 2011 survey in July 2012.
  • Corporate Plan (University Strategy): Council approved the draft framework for maintenance of the Corporate Plan which will in future be referred to as the University Strategy. The consultation on institutional priorities will be undertaken during November/December 2012 with the final version of the University Strategy set to be approved by Council in June 2013.
  • New Student Residence & Refectory (R6) Project: Council approved the R6 project with a budget of £43m (including £1.3m in respect of the cost of re-providing the car park). The new building will provide 706 bedrooms and a 350-cover refectory, with completion due in July 2014.
  • General Teaching Accommodation Building: Council approved the construction of a new GTA Building with a budget of £26m. The aim is for the building to be available for 2013/14.
  • University Estimates 2012/13: Council approved the estimates of University income and expenditure for 2012/13.
  • Membership of Council: Mr Thomas Sheppard has been re-appointed to serve on Council until 31 December 2013. Mr Sheppard is Managing Partner of Thrings Solicitors and has been a member of the Council since 2008. Mr John Stanion, Chairman & Chief Executive of Vinci PLC, a world leader in construction, will join the membership of Council next month.
  • University Librarian: Council appointed Ms Kate Robinson as University Librarian with effect from 20 August 2012. Read more.


The Council is the governing body of the University. It is responsible for the University's finances and investments and for the oversight of the estate and buildings. Read more
