Budding social entrepreneurs invited to pitch for share of £25,000!

The University's Students’ Union is inviting students, staff and local community groups to get together to pitch for a share of £25,000 of start-up funding, at a three-day event designed to create new social enterprises.

The free event, called Social Start Up, will run in Bath from 15-17 November and involves a mix of networking and workshops. The idea is to create new partnerships between local community groups and University students and staff to generate new businesses with a social conscience.

The event kicks off with a networking event open to all at Carpenter House, Broad Quay, on Thursday 15 November, from 6pm-8pm. It’s an opportunity for local groups to enthuse students and staff about their organisation and its needs and to get together to discuss ideas for setting up a social enterprise for an inspirational cause or issue.

On Friday 16 November two up-and-running student-led social enterprises will present their success stories, including the Bath Soup Company that was founded to tackle homelessness in the city. Elephant Branded will also be showcasing their recycled bags which generate free school kits for children in Africa and Asia.

On Saturday 17 November a lunch and networking session from 12-1pm will be followed by pitches from the newly formed partnerships. The event will close with a civic reception at the Assembly Rooms from 7-8pm.

The event is organised by the Students’ Union’s Enterprise team. Siobian Hone, Enterprise Education Manager, said: “We’ve been successful in gaining £25,000 from UnLtd, the leading provider of support to social entrepreneurs in the UK, and it’s fantastic to be able to offer a share of this funding to staff and students at the University and our wider local community.

“We really encourage people to come along to discuss ideas to get new social enterprises off the ground, to benefit local people and a diverse range of needs and issues. People are welcome to come to as many of the sessions as they wish – or just join us for networking and a free lunch. Our key aim is to connect community needs with student and staff projects, so we want to get everyone talking.”

Social Start-Up is part of a wider workshop by the Social Entrepreneurship and Education Consortium (SEEC) hosted by the University. SEEC is based at Elon University in North Carolina and shares best practice in university based social enterprise.
