Vice-Chancellor goes behind the scenes with the Department of Estates

Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell, recently met over 50 staff from the Department of Estates during one of her visits to individual departments which are taking place throughout the academic year.

The visit started in the Building and Mechanical workshops on Level 1 where the Vice-Chancellor spent time talking with the teams based there.

Dame Glynis was shown how the Building Management System works which controls the ventilation, heating and water circulation to all the academic and student accommodation buildings.

The team then showed her around the Boiler Plant producing 10.3 Megawatt – enough to power a small town – and the new Combined Heat and Power Plant which will supply our new General Teaching Accommodation (GTA) building and our planned new Student Accommodation.

The Vice-Chancellor also inspected progress on the GTA project from the top floor of the Estates building before chatting with staff about a wide range of topics.

Martyn Whalley, Director of Estates, said:  “The team welcomed the chance to talk with the Vice-Chancellor and ask questions about not only estates issues but also about the University and higher education in general.”

Dame Glynis said: “I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with the Estates team. It was a pleasure to meet and talk with so many of those who do such a fantastic job to keep the campus running smoothly. Their role is often unseen by many but is crucial to our success. Thank you to everyone involved.”
