Two academically outstanding international students from the University’s Faculty of Engineering & Design have been awarded the Banco de Santander scholarship by Santander Universities.

Formula Santander Scholars Elia Hamouche and Chiew Heng Chung are to receive scholarships from Santander Universities.
Elia Hamouche, a Mechanical Engineering student from Kuwait, and Chiew Heng Chung from Malaysia who studies Iintegrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, will each receive a one-off 5,000 euro scholarship to support them in their studies.
The scholarships were awarded by the Santander Universities global network, founded to help provide students with the support they need to become tomorrow’s leaders. The network funds awards to outstanding students and projects, helps entrepreneurs and also gives students the opportunity to travel abroad to continue their studies.
The University signed an agreement with Banco de Santander in 2007, and is today one of over 1000 universities in 17 countries have joined the Santander Universities network.
During this semester, the University further cemented its long-standing relationship with Santander with the opening of a new branch of the high-street bank on campus. Elia Hamouche and Chiew Heng Chung were both present at the branch opening ceremony.
Professor Gary Hawley, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, said: “Both Elia and Chiew have demonstrated excellence in their academic work. They are clear candidates for the Santander Universities scholarship and I am very pleased to see their hard work recognised. Both are a credit to their schools in Kuwait and Malaysia I wish them all the best in their studies.”
