Heavy snow forecast – possible disruption to campus

Message from Mark Humphriss, Chair of the Emergency Management Team.

Heavy snow is forecast in the Bath area tomorrow (Friday 18 January).

It is therefore possible that the University will not be able to function normally tomorrow.

A decision on whether the University campus will have to close tomorrow as a result of adverse weather conditions will be posted on the University internal and external website homepages by 7.30am tomorrow.

A decision has already been taken to move the start time of all tomorrow’s and Monday’s exams back by 30 minutes (9.30am to 10am, 1 to 1.30pm and 4.30 to 5pm) to allow students and staff time to arrive safely on campus if the 7.30am announcement is that scheduled exams should proceed.

For those without web access, there will be a recorded message on 01225 383200 from 7.30am onwards.

There is also a new Twitter account for University staff, just follow @uniofbathstaff for the latest announcements.

In any event, all staff who are able to work from home tomorrow are free to do so with their manager’s permission. You may find helpful the guidelines on working from home.

Unless a decision to close is taken, the University’s policy on adverse weather conditions stipulates that staff who are not able to attend work (and cannot work from home with their manager’s permission) will need to take that day as unpaid or annual leave.

Certain key operational staff are, as usual, asked to attend even on days when the University is closed. Staff to whom this applies will be advised by their department; they should ignore any messages about closure and instead, as usual, take advice from their department.

Managers of staff without web access are asked to communicate this message to those staff today.

If the decision is that campus must close, the library will remain open with self-service facility. Every effort will be made to ensure that the Fresh shop, the STV (Sports Training Village) and at least one catering outlet will remain open, even if for limited opening hours. Further details will be announced tomorrow on this if required.
