Message from Professor Bernie Morley, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching)

This announcement concerns examinations originally scheduled for Friday 18 and Tuesday 22 January 2013 which were postponed due to adverse weather conditions. It outlines the arrangements the University is making to ensure that these examinations can take place.

These arrangements have been made in full consultation with the Students’ Union based on the principle that all students (unless otherwise stated) are expected to be present at the University during a normal teaching week. The representations received by both the University and the Students’ Union regarding these arrangements have been considered in balance with the need to cause the minimum possible disruption to the teaching programme.

All students are asked to review this announcement taking care to read in detail the specific arrangements relating to their category of study.  Most students fall within Category 1.

Category 1

University of Bath students whose studies are based at Bath during both Semesters 1 and 2.

Category 2

Students whose programme of study requires them to be away from the University at the start of Semester 2.

(This category includes both University of Bath students going out on placement for Semester 2 and visiting students who are returning to their home institutions at the end of Semester 1).

Reminder for all Students

The assessment regulations contained within your programme handbook will continue to apply to these new arrangements. Deciding not to attend an examination could adversely affect your progression. Final year students are also reminded that failure to attend could make you ineligible to receive your degree.

New arrangements relating to examinations for students within Category 1

Examinations originally scheduled for Friday 18 January and those postponed from Tuesday 22 January will now take place on either Monday 4 or Tuesday 5 February 2013.

You will be informed of the new date, start time and location of your postponed examination by Wednesday 30 January. Please note that this information will be sent via your University email account, not via SAMIS.

All teaching and other activities scheduled for Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 February will be cancelled.  Alternative arrangements for these activities will be announced, where appropriate, by departments/the School.

New arrangements relating to examinations for students within Category 2

Since your programme of study requires you to be away from the University at the start of Semester 2, your Department/School will endeavour to contact you by Friday 8 February 2013 via your University email account regarding the new arrangements for your assessment. You will be given at least five days’ notice of these new arrangements. New arrangements are being made in consultation with the relevant Board of Studies.

Announcement of results (applies to all students)

As previously announced, results for examinations which took place on the originally scheduled date will be released no later than Friday 1 March 2013.

Results for examinations which have been rescheduled

It is anticipated that an announcement about a date for release of results of rescheduled examinations will be made by Friday February 15 2013. The new date will allow for marking to be carried out properly and for the marks to be agreed formally by the appropriate committee. This is in accordance with the University’s normal procedures.

As previously stated this announcement outlines the steps the University is taking to ensure that appropriate examination and assessment is in place for all relevant programmes of study. The University acknowledges the difficulties caused for both students and staff by the recent adverse weather conditions and appreciates the patience and understanding of all those concerned.

Possibility of further disruption to scheduled examinations

In the event that further examinations are postponed a new announcement will be made relating to arrangements for those examinations only.
